Fiction by its very definition is unreal. When we read a novel we are aware that the narrative and the characters in it are merely a product of creativity of the author. When we view a film we know that the characters are just acting their parts essentially pretending to be somebody besides themselves. Still we are emotionally affected by the twists and turns in the story. We laugh, weep together, and also feel indignant towards the bad men. The adorable hero or heroine may be despicable in actual life and the protagonist may be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them using the characters they are portraying. In essence for this brief period we ourselves get hauled to the imaginary world of the writer. Oddly enough this happens also with the writer at least to some of these. He or she goes through the very same emotions while composing and perhaps later as well. Getting back to fiction the imagination of the writer also has to be predicated on his direct or indirect experiences. In this sense fiction relies on reality and to this extent it represents another dimension of reality. Here of course we run into the philosophical problem of the exact significance of reality. There are two diametrically opposite views – materialistic and spiritualistic. In accordance with the former only things that can be perceived through our perceptions are real, everything else is unreal. The latter asserts that there is one ultimate reality from which all that we perceive comes out and what that is perceived is only an illusion. We consider a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was clearly referring to the reality of the phenomenal world. The term illusion can have different connotations but in general it means perceiving something rather different from what it really is. Therefore the existence of the thing is a necessity for illusion, it isn’t a mental construction. Imagination is a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with whatever really existing. Therefore the connection between fiction and reality is entirely different from that between reality and illusion. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
In a philosophical sense that the phenomenal world itself could be regarded as fiction. This is exactly what Shakespeare possibly meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all men and women merely players”. We might also consider everything in the world (space, time, issue) as gamers because everything has its entry and exit. We naturally run into the issue of saying what the point is and who wrote the script. Shakespeare probably believed in God, strict determinism, also in the reality of earth, so he didn’t have this problem. Now it’s generally believed that the universe also has a beginning and will have an ending. If the world is also a participant, are there multiple universes or does it come exclusively on the stage and then introduces other players? But what’s the point in this case? Quantum physics points to one possibility. At extremely small scales of space and time there is a quantum void that’s not really empty but full of energy that is constantly changing itself into virtual particles as well as back. What remains after the conclusion of the universe could possibly be an infinite version of this quantum void filled with energy into which all the matter has converted itself. This universal energy is the origin of and background for all.
It is not merely a philosophical point either. We spend a substantial part of our own life in the fictional universe. We muse about the items in long run and also live over the past imagining what might have been. The imagination about the future is based on our hopes and aspirations and also to some extent it is a positive in the sense we’re in a position to mold our future if we sincerely attempt. But musing within the past is a futile exercise since we all know for a fact that ‘what could have been’ is only fantasy that never happened. Still it serves the exact same purpose as fiction in the perspective of amusement. We amuse ourselves by imagining how life would have been, knowing fully well that it has no fact whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense past, at least the distant past, is fiction. In a particular sense history is fiction since it always contains the subjective bias of the author. What we know of Buddha and Jesus today is more fiction than facts.
